The North Eastern railway operated some of the most difficult lines in the country; lines which were very susceptible to the effects of winter weather including routes over the Pennines and the hills of North Yorkshire.  The NER built a fleet of snowploughs to clear these lines when the snow came.  A variety were created, often utilising old locomotive tender frames.  Twenty-four of these interesting vehicles were constructed between 1887 & 1909.  They were operated and stored in pairs.  A snow ploughing train would comprise of two to four locomotives coupled together with a plough at each end, enabling the train to operate in either direction.  The ploughs would be driven at snow drifts at speeds of up to 40mph!  Ploughs would be stored coupled facing each other so they could be shunted easily.  All have now been withdrawn from service although some were used until 1975.  Three examples have survived into preservation, these are:

No 12 – Fully restored & part of the national collection, currently on display at Locomotion, The NRM at Shildon, Co. Durham.

No 18 – Restored & currently at the North Yorkshire Moors Railway.

No 20 - At Beamish museum, Co. Durham in un-restored condition.

The model depicts the series of snow plough No’s 11 & 12 built in 1892.  Everything is included that is required for a rolling model.
