The J70 was one of the most unusual locomotives to enter service on the British railway network. It was primarily designed for use on the famous Wisbech & Upwell Tramway in Cambridgeshire although they also saw use at the ports of Great Yarmouth and Ipswich. The locomotives were built as a more powerful replacement of the GER’s G15 0-4-0s and they were the first GER locomotive to have Walschaerts valve gear. Unfortunately no J70s survived into preservation, however they have been made famous thanks to the Rev. W. Awdry who based his character ‘Toby’ in ‘The Railway Series’ on a J70 after spending some time living near the Wisbech & Upwell tramway.
